Historic Timeline

1896 Fridtjof Nansen celebrates his successful expedition to the North Pole in Trondheim with many distinguished guests.

1897 Official opening of Britannia Hotel, and Trondheim celebrated its 900-year anniversary.

1906 The coronation of King Haakon in Trondheim. Many distinguished guests stay at the hotel during the event and Britannia is in charge of the festive food and drinks.

1918 Palmehaven opens.

1926 Queen Wilhelmina, Crown Princess Juliane and Prins Heinrich of the Netherlands stay at the hotel in connection with the laying of the foundation stone for the student union building Studentersamfundet.

1930 World Exhibition in Trondheim and the Japanese Crown Prince Takamatsu visits Trondheim and stays at Britannia Hotel.

1946 World War II is over. The Norwegian King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav visit Trondheim, and Britannia Hotel reopens after being occupied by the Germans during the war.

1958 His Majesty King Olav receives the blessing in Nidarosdomen Cathedral and Britannia Hotel and Palmehaven are in charge of the official banquet arranged by the City of Trondheim. Britannia Hotel is also in charge of the dinner at the Royal Residence Stiftsgården.

1969 Queen Elisabeth, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Anne as well as their entire royal company visit Trondheim. Britannia Hotel is in charge of the accommodation and food and drink during their visit.

1991 Their Majesties King Harald and Queen Sonja receive the blessing in Nidarosdomen Cathedral. The Britannia Hotel and Palmehaven are in charge of the official banquet arranged by the City of Trondheim.

1997 Britannia Hotel celebrates 100 years the very same year as Trondheim celebrates its millennium. The city has never seen so many events in a single year.

1997 During the 1000-year anniversary for Trondheim, the King and Queen celebrate their 60th birthdays and Britannia is in charge of the festive arrangements.

2001 Britannia Hall opens. This is the hotel’s showcase conference hall. The room is decorated with Norway’s third largest wall painting on canvas, painted by two of the most famous artists in Trondheim – Håkon Bleken and Håkon Gullvåg.

2002 The Norwegian Princess Märtha Louise and author Ari Behn are married in Nidarosdomen Cathedral. Britannia Hotel is in charge of the wedding reception in the Royal Residence Stiftsgården. The wedding cake is made by the hotel’s confectioners.

2003 Britannia Hotel is selected Enterprise of the Year in the counties of Nord and Sør-Trøndelag. The jury included the Mayor of Trondheim, the County Mayor, chairman of NiT and Bank Director of Nordea. The other nominees were Salmar on Frøya and Bunnpris/ I.K. Lykke AS.

2005 The Japanese Emperor and Empress visit Trondheim and stay in suite number 809. Britannia Hotel is in charge of the lunch in the Archbishop’s Palace and the banquet in the Royal Residence Stiftsgården hosted by HM Queen Sonja, the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess.

2006 Britannia Hotel is the main hotel during the Coronation Jubilee from 20 to 23 June. The Royal Family, The Royal Palace, the government and the Parliamentary presidency stay at Britannia Hotel. Our chef, Atle Bjøringsøy, was in charge of the Coronation Menu served at the Royal Residence Stiftsgården.
