It all started back in the 1920s, when the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of creating a wine to compete with the best wines from Bordeaux; a world-class Italian wine which at the time was unimaginable.
The estate San Guido started wine production with Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of the 1940s, but, up until the end of the 60s, the wine was drunk exclusively on the farm, which is located on the coast of Tuscany.
The wines were totally different from what the critics were used to at the time, and it took several decades before their product finally reached the open market. With the 1968 vintage, history was made and Sassicaia stands to this day as a symbol of what can be achieved with a tireless pursuit of quality. Sempre Avanti!
The first bottles went on sale commercially in 1968. It was named Sassicaia, and is considered the first so-called super Tuscan; a wine of high quality, but which breached or fell outside the law, partly due to the use of international grape varieties, in this case mainly cabernet sauvignon. Today, Sassicaia is one of Italy's most famous red wines.
Despite the undisputed quality of the wine, it would be a few more years before the world started to take note of this majestic wine. When Decanter Magazine organized a tasting in 1978, the then six-year-old Sassicaia 1968 triumphed over the best from Bordeaux.
After several years of rave reviews and ever-increasing international demand, the red wines from Bolgheri got their own DOC in 1994, and Tenuta San Guido was finally awarded Italy's first, and only, estate-based DOC; Bolgheri Sassicaia.
