Through international awards and accolades, Britannia Bar has, in just a few years, established itself as one of the Nordic region’s leading cocktail bars. With award-winning cocktails, excellent hospitality and a clear connection to the history of Britannia and Trondheim, the bar has become a destination for cocktail enthusiasts from Norway and abroad.

One of Norway’s most acclaimed cocktail bars

In recent years, Britannia Bar has received a number of awards from the international bar industry.

In 2025, Britannia Bar received three awards at the Bartenders’ Choice Awards in Stockholm: Best Cocktail Bar in Norway, Best Cocktail Menu in Norway and Best Bartender in Norway, the latter of which was awarded to bar manager Øyvind Lindgjerdet.

In 2026, Britannia Bar went on to win two further awards in the same competition: Best Cocktail Menu in Norway for the second year running and the People’s Choice Award.

In July 2026, Britannia Bar was also included in 50 Best Discovery, the international guide published by the organisation behind The World’s 50 Best Bars. The guide brings together recommended bars and restaurants from around the world, based on the votes of the academies behind The World’s 50 Best Bars and The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Britannia Bar is one of only a handful of Norwegian cocktail bars to be included.

Britannia Bar has also been awarded 97 points in the Falstaff Bar Guide Nordics 2026, a score that places the bar amongst the highest-rated cocktail bars in Norway.

Portraits of Britannia - a cocktail menu inspired by Britannia’s history

Much of the international acclaim can be attributed to the ‘Portretter’ cocktail menu, developed by Øyvind Lindgjerdet over the course of nearly two years.

The menu consists of ten signature cocktails, each inspired by a person with a special connection to the Britannia Hotel and its history.

The work began at the National Library, where Lindgjerdet immersed himself in historical archive material. The research continued through conversations with the individuals themselves and their descendants, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the stories to be told.

For each cocktail, Lindgjerdet has also created a three-dimensional art print, in which the colours, shapes and details draw inspiration from the person, the story and the contents of the glass.

Flavours from Trondheim and Trøndelag

The portraits are clearly rooted in nature and the local produce found around us. In collaboration with local foragers and producers, Britannia Bar uses ingredients from Trondheim and Trøndelag as part of the storytelling on the menu.

Truffle seaweed, white roe, birch leaves, hawthorn blossoms and spruce shoots are among the ingredients that are hand-picked and find their way into the cocktails. The ingredients are chosen both for the flavour they impart and for their connection to the person and the story behind each cocktail.

This is how Portretter becomes more than just a collection of signature cocktails. The menu gives guests the opportunity to discover Britannia’s heritage and aspects of Trondheim’s history through flavours, ingredients and stories.

The stories are also shared by the bartenders. Knowledge of the ingredients, the people and the inspiration behind each cocktail is a natural part of the experience, alongside the personalised and attentive service that characterises the Britannia Hotel.

Cocktails, champagne and Norwegian aquavit

Britannia Bar also has a particular focus on Norwegian aquavit. The menu includes Opland Juvel, a rare Norwegian aquavit, aged over many years and often described as one of the world’s most exclusive. Only 30 bottles exist worldwide, and bottle number 27 has found its home at Britannia Bar.

The aquavit is a blend of carefully selected distillates, some dating back to 1929, presented in a hand-blown crystal decanter from Magnor Glassverk.

As well as Portretter’s signature cocktails, the bar serves classic cocktails, champagne by the glass and a selection of light bites. The bartenders are happy to offer recommendations, whether you’d like to explore the menu, try some Norwegian aquavit or simply prefer a classic.
